Failures

From the 15th to the 19th of March, the streets of Benicarló are invaded by the noise of the rockets, the smell of the grilled meat of the streets and by the ninots that make up the fallas of the 14 commissions of the city. The origin of this festival dates back to the ancient tradition of carpenters who on the eve of their patron saint burned old junk. Over time they evolved and adopted a sense of criticism and irony.

In 1974 "El despertar" was planted, the first falla in Benicarló and marked the starting signal for the city's fallas that have evolved to the present day. The Fallas of Benicarló have the distinction of Festival of Regional Tourist Interest.

In 2016, UNESCO declared the Fallas "Intangible Heritage of Humanity", a worldwide recognition for the festival that year after year grows and spreads like wildfire.

Outstanding events of the Fallas that you cannot miss are: "la Cridà, the Cavalcada del Ninot, the mascletà or the nit de la cremà":

  • La Cridà: it could be compared to the proclamation of other festivals. It is an act where the falleras mayores of the city make a call to the beginning of the festivities from the balcony of the City Hall.
  • The Cavalcade of the Ninot: in this parade the commissions of the Fallas expose, distilling with costumes, a critical political-social theme related to the theme of the monument.
  • The mascletà: the name comes from a type of rocket, the masclet. The pyrotechnic devices produce sensations similar to a concert, with rhythms and changes in intensity. Finally, everything explodes impressively and in a matter of just 5-7 minutes, until it exceeds 120 decibels. The "mascletàs" normally take place at 2:00 p.m. in the Plaça de la Constitució.
  • La Nit de la Cremà: the Fallas end with the burning of the falla, where fire, as a purifying symbol, is responsible for consuming the criticism that these fallas exposed.
