Larramendi's promenade

ROUTE 5. LARRAMENDI'S PROMENADE

Distance: 1 km walking (can also be done cycling)
Time needed: 1h 30min

Go to the MAG (Guardamar Archaeological Museum), where you’ll receive all the necessary information in the museum’s Ethnographic Section allusive to the traditional world and the recent town planning. Guardamar began as a new town after the 1829 earthquakes destroyed the medieval and modern age walled citadel. The new town’s design was the work of Engineer Larramendi, an early example of earthquake resistant architecture.

The next stop will be the Plaça dels Llauradors (The Farmers’ Square). José Agustín de Larramendi’s included two circular and equidistant squares in his plan currently referred to as the Plaça dels Llauradors (Farmers’ Square) and Plaça dels Pescadors (Fishermen’s Square), breaking the plan's symmetry.
The most important landmark is the church of Sant Jaume (Saint James), a neoclassic building of three naves designed by Engineer Larramendi. Building began in 1845 although it was devoted to the cult in 1892. The 18th century church bells from the mediaeval town are preserved as well as some pieces of baroque imagery and other objects of worship including the sculpture of Our Lady of the Rosary (17th century).

Once you've reached the other Larramendi town plan circular square, visit the Engineer Mira Museum House (Tourist Office).
